When writing this blog I like to try and think of things that others might not know about South Korea. But today I’m going to dial it back and talk about some good ol kpop. But I am going to try and introduce bands you may not know. Mostly because I am not a huge SNSD (Girls Generation) fan.
2ne1 (To anyone)
A 4 member group with a pretty diverse roster. CL, the oldest at 29 tends to rap. Park Bom the typical foreigner favorite. Minji, the 18 year old skilled dancer. And my favorite Sandara, who will one day be my wife. Far different from SNSD, much more hip hop and punk, they have worked with the black eyed peas in America.
MissA
I was introduced to this band by my close friend in Korea Yeon-ju, she would sing their songs every day. Finally I looked them up and now listen daily, again a 4 member band. They have done a little bit of everything, hip-hop, pop, party.
Fx
A huge one hit wonder. They have a few songs but none quite as popular as NU ABO. The name comes from NU being a play on words, it’s meant to sound like the English word new, and then ABO is to imply blood types. So the name of the song is “new blood”. When this came out you couldn’t go anywhere in Korea without hearing this song played constantly. Only girl band with a boy in it, the boys name however is amber…he left the band soon after this song.
BoA
BoA is not new; she has been around for a very long time and is quite famous. However I don’t see too many people talking about her. Personally I didn’t like her early stuff, but I think she has gotten a lot better over the years. She has done songs in many languages and has a fan base all over the world, including Korea, Japan, and America.
Those are only just a few bands that you should check out. There are many more. I’m hoping this will make some of you branch out away from SNSD and listen to good music instead. Kpop doesn’t have to be about how much plastic surgery and auto tune a band can get.
Peace,
Wintermute
