Good Eats

Hello,

My past few posts were a bit of a downer, so the next few should be a bit more positive. So next I'm going to talk about some of the common foods you will find in South Korea. First of if you are a vegetarian I would not come to Korea, most if not all korean dishes have some form of pork in it.

Kimbap (Kim Bop)
Bap is the Korean word for rice, Kim is Korean for seaweed, kimbap is rice wrapped in seaweed, much like sushi. Traditionally its served with other things inside. Chum-chi kimbap has tuna in it, you can get ham or egg, etc etc.

Bibimbap (Bee-bim-bop)
Basically its a really big bowl filled with rice and other assorted foods. Such as squid, pork, veggies, eggs, etc. This is a full meal on its own, usually served for lunch.

Omurice (Oo-ma-rice)
Pretty much an omelet. Loaded with rice peas and corn, and usually has a sauce drizzled over the top of it. The sauce is tangy, not sweet or spicy, just a added flavor. some bits of pork can be put into it. Sometimes served with Pork cutlet.

Kimchi (Kim-chi)
Kimchi is cold cabbage served with seasonings. There are now currently hundreds of different variations of this seasoning, but what makes kimchi kimchi, is whether or not its served hot or cold. Kimchi is provided to you with every single meal. Breakfast, lunch, dinner. It's cheap and widely produced and typically free. I use to like it, but have lost taste for it as it is very common.

Korean BBQ (Ko-ree-an Bar Bee Que)
Korean BBQ is a huge past time in South Korea. You go out with all of your friends or coworkers to a KBBQ restaurant and sit down. Immediately piles and piles of food is brought to you that fills the whole table. You order your meat and they bring it to the grill in front of you. Either you cook it or a technician typically will if you're a foreigner. You are also given leaves, mint or lettuce, and you will take the cooked meat along with sauce onions and garlic and put it in the leaf, roll it up, and eat it all in one bite, no more. Very delicious, But very expensive. You will most likely be drinking heavily while enjoying this meal so expect to be put back about 30 or more per person.

If you have never enjoyed Korean cooking, I would highly recommend it. It's worth the try. Again its not for vegetarians, can often be a bit spicy, but is cheap and quick. There are many other dishes not mentioned that are worth looking into, I hope this gives you a bit of insight on what you might have to look forward to if you ever travel to South Korea.

Peace,
Wintermute
