Haikus

Hello,
My name is Wintermute and this is Dumbr. Today we are going to talk about a useful way to get your students writing more creatively using a specific poem called Haiku.

A Haiku is a poem that has only three lines, each line has a set number of syllables. The first line has 5, the second has 7, and the third has 5 again.

You could hand the students paper and tell them to start writing, but needless to say writing isn’t always easy, even for adults. So to better help stimulate their creative juices provide them with the material. My suggestion is fruit. Bring in some fruit, cut it up, and let them eat it, then have them write a Haiku about how it made them feel.

The apple is sweet
I can eat apples at home
I like eating Fruit.

Poems are expressions of one self, so remember there are no wrong answers. Be sure to encourage your students a lot to at least try. Afterwards have them present their poems to the rest of the class. You could also use a video or a song in place of fruit.

Best of luck, and feel free to post any Haikus of your own in the comments. I will be flying out in about two hours to head back to Korea to start teaching once again. I will not be able to post Thursday morning, but if I am lucky maybe I can get a post in there somewhere.

Your Teacher,
Wintermute
