Hello,
Wintermute here with your daily dose of Dumbr. Today I want to talk about racism. Are Koreans racist towards the white man. Simple answer is yes you will deal with a lot of racism. Obviously the country is still evolving and has a long way to go. Generally speaking the old will not like having you around at all. However the younger you get the more you can tell a lot of the racism is dieing off.
Is it difficult for you to deal with? No not really. Sadly your manager will most likely be old and therefore will not like you.I have dealt with plenty of racism at my new school. Only four weeks in and daily I am not treated as an equal. Part of me wants to just call it out and say "yeah I get it, I'm white and not korean I know". They will remind you daily that you are not one of them and therefore not as capable as them.
Worst part is they told me not to date Koreans because I am American and that Koreans and Americans are not right. Basically they don't want our kind mixing with their kind, they want it to be strictly Korean blood in the country. Makes me think of Voldermort.
On the street old people may spit next to you or try and aim for you, usually shop clerks don't like having you in there. They think that it will become a foreigner store and Koreans will not want to shop there.
Again its nothing you can't handle, it's annoying the amount of disrespect you will have to put up with, I don't expect people to treat me like a king here but just as an equal, that will not always happen though.
Your Teacher,
Wintermute
I never knew it was like that. That sucks for you, man. I'd just try to be as respectable and nice as possible and maybe they'll learn to do the same. Americans have a very bad reputation around the world.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, everybody is racist. It's whether you choose to take it personal, or ignore it and go about your business.
ReplyDeletei feel you, koreans also be racist towards other asians. not saying all of them- most are cool
ReplyDeleteRacism.. wherever there is a majority and a minority, it will rear its ugly head.
ReplyDeletethat is a bit discouraging, after all, you are there to provide service to their children. :(
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, this all pure-blood and homogeneous ethnicity bulls*** sometimes got on my nerves when I lived there. There's a great book on the subject which is partly available for free @google books:

Based on yesterday's post, perhaps you just need to walk around with a KFC bag to remind everyone of the good things our people have brought them.
ReplyDeleteracism.. you can find that everywhere nowdays
ReplyDeletewow didn't know that it was that bad over there!
ReplyDeleteBeats me what they have got to be racist about. Still living in the Medievil thought patern. Racism will dissapear as time goes by. Soon I hope.
ReplyDeleteThere's racism everywhere though. Just gotta you just happen to be on the other side of it.
ReplyDeleteIts the same here in Germany. The Corean community is very isolated. Coreans only go to other coreans houses, and the teanagers at my school often sayed they were presured from their parents not to meet up, or god forbid, date Germans.
ReplyDeletebut in the words of the prophet Dylan; "the times they are´a´changing"
